The May Lineup
When wellness stretches to extremes.
All,
SPRING. It’s a time of year rooted in renewal. And, as a result, a season when many opt to clean the proverbial dust off their health.
I welcome it. Even experience the pull too.
Eating a little fresher, moving a bit more never hurts.
But over the years, as the earth has turned, the notion of health has morphed into something other. Once known as “the absence of disease,” (a definition I’m not sure I fully endorse) wellness – and all its communities, services and rituals – has now taken on a life of its own.
And I think it’s time we ask if it’s possible that it’s doing more harm than good.
I say this, of course, as someone who’s fully entrenched in the system, yet it’s this very existence – as a fixture in the industry designed to sell wellness – that offers a unique vantage point.
One that I equate to the notion of the K-shaped economy.
If you are not familiar with the term, it is being used in current media cycles to describe wealth gap acceleration, where – to put it bluntly – some thrive while others struggle. This results in a diminished middle ground saddled largely by the haves and the have nots.
Now, does this have a correlation to obtaining optimal health in our country? Hands down, without a doubt.
But the “K” I see in terms of wellness has less to do with an economic divide and more to do with extreme measures of rigidity, discipline and protocols all in the name of taking care of oneself.
Because somewhere along the line we lost scope of the basics and replaced them with rules.
Foods to avoid.
Supplements to take.
Workouts to PR.
So if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by “advice” or are struggling to keep up with what you think you “should” be doing for your health, I encourage you to join us this May as we detox ourselves from an industry that – to be frank – excels at profiting off our insecurities.
Our goal won’t be to create a plan or establish new habits, but rather to wake up to the narrative we’re being fed about what it means to live well.
Because in this divided world where the fit are getting fitter while others only sink further into the couch, I personally believe wellness is found somewhere in between.
I mean, isn’t that what balance is all about?
Your lineup is below. I’m looking forward to it.
